The Real Struggles of Teaching in a Pandemic

Jun 8, 2021 | Donation Stories

Kate is a supply and Long-Term Occasional teacher (LTO) who works in Hamilton, Ontario, for the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB). Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 she has struggled to consistently work and find LTO and supply jobs due to the complications and impact Covid-19 has had on the education system.

Initially the school board did not offer supply jobs so she was out of work for the end of the 2019-20 school year. Since the new school year, the sporadic changes between in-person and remote classes has had a profound effect on Kate and her students’ health – mentally, socially and emotionally. Remotely, many students don’t show up, and those who do are distracted or disengaged. In the classroom, she has close contact with other teachers and students so it’s required that she wears both a face mask and a face shield the entire school day.

Following Public Health advice, the HWDSB made masks and shields mandatory to keep all teachers and students as safe as possible, but only able to provide some very basic PPE supplies. Since registering and receiving her Healthful Plus donation package Kate has found the Healthful+ shields to be much more clear, comfortable and studier, giving her a better sense of security so she’s able to remain focussed on performing her in-person duties as a teacher.

If staying comfortable while keeping yourself and others safe in the workplace is high on your priority list, you can learn more about our Anti-fog Face Shields here or our 4-Layer Face Masks here.
